A really bad idea

Last Friday I learned, pretty much by accident, that the Crabtree Valley Post Office is scheduled to close on June 24 of 2011. This is going to be a great inconvenience to me, and I have no doubt it will be a great inconvenience to a great many people in Raleigh.

According to its (not-prominently displayed) letter to Postal Customers, customers can access retail postal services at the North Hills Station, 3.6 miles away, or at the Westgate Station, 6.2 miles away (according to Google Maps).

I dare say for most of us the Westgate Station is too remote to use. Thus we are consigned to the North Hills station.

The Crabtree Valley Post Office is a busy one. Customers who use the North Hills Station already suffer long lines most of the day on normal business days. No sensible person could ever believe that the North Hills Station, suffering as it does from excess volume now, could absorb and adequately serve the additional volume from the Crabtree Valley Station.

One more not-so-little inconvenience that results from this change: the Crabtree Valley Station is open until 6:00 in the evening, and does a tremendous volume of business between 5:00 and 6:00. I know. I'm there almost every day during that time, and so are a lot of other people. The North Hills Station closes at 5:00 PM. As of June 24th, we'll have to be there before 5:00, so forget dropping off the office mail on the way home from work.

This is a disastrous idea for the public, and in fact, for the Post Office. It's being done with a complete lack of concern for sound business management and for serving the mission of the Post Office. It's false economy. More people will turn to other delivery and communication services as a result of this change.

I'm going to write my Senators and my Congressman to see if I can influence them to influence somebody who can stop this from happening. I encourage you to do so as well, and if you have any other ideas for what can be done, please post your comments here.
